How Many Boxes Do I Need To Move?
How Many Boxes Do I Need To Move?
Congratulations, you are moving to a new place. One of the things that are the most complicated in moving is the packaging. How many packages do you need? Where to buy containers for moving? What other packaging materials do you need to move? How to pack everything in such a way that nothing will break or be destroyed?
To answer all these questions there are 3 things to consider:
- What is the size of the place you are moving to?
- What other packaging materials do I need?
- How many things are you planning to leave behind?
How big is the place you are moving into? That will help you determine how many boxes you will need for moving, but it also depends on the size of the place. On average, each room needs about ten large boxes that will be filled with various items such as books, keepsakes, dishes etc.
You can choose from 3 different sizes of homes to help make a better decision:
- Small Apartment or Condo – Choose this option if your room sizes are typical of an apartment or condo, meaning they are a bit smaller than that of a single-family home. Overall, your home will typically be less than 1200 square feet and have 1-2 bedrooms. This will require around 20 boxes.
- Average Size Home – Choose this option if your home is a typical single-family home with standard room sizes. Overall, your home will typically be between 1200 – 2500 square feet and have 2-4 bedrooms and may require around 50 boxes of various sizes.
- Large Size Home – Choose this option if your home is a larger home than average, with oversized rooms that hold more personal belongings that need to be packed up. Overall, your home will typically be over 2500 square feet and may require around 100 boxes of various sizes.
And the other parameter you need to consider is if you can leave any of your belongings behind. To read more about how to sort and pack before moving read our article The ultimate guide for moving.
The last thing you need to determine before moving day is what other packaging materials do I need?
You will need additional packaging material to protect your belongings during the move:
- Cardboard boxes.
- Packing paper.
- Bubble wrap.
- Moving blankets or furniture pads.
- Stretch plastic wrap.
- Heavy-duty packaging tape with a tape dispenser.
- Permanent markers for labeling.
